Experience

My name is Melanie, and I’m delighted to announce the opening of my small, home-based, early childcare space, Blossom and Rimu.
Blossom & Rimu offers a nurturing, nature-connected sanctuary for four little ones. We are nestled on beautiful Okura River Road, right opposite the park and estuary. Our downstairs area has been thoughtfully transformed into a dedicated early childhood space, like a little micro-kindergarten, filled with calming natural tones, eco-friendly resources, opportunities for exploration and creativity, and, of course, an abundance of love and care.

I am a qualified and licensed early childcare educator, with over 10 years experience in kindergartens, nurseries, and nature-based education, including co-founding and leading my own forest group.

Home Environment

The name Blossom and Rimu was chosen with much love and intention. At the front of our home stands a beautiful strong Rimu, while a vibrant Cherry Blossom graces our backyard. Together they provide strength, shelter, beauty, and nourishment to the birds, insects, our family, and our home… They felt like the perfect representation of the environment I hope to create for the children ~ grounded, nurturing, and full of wonder.
I currently have spaces available for four children, and am so looking forward to welcoming new families into our sanctuary ~ The opening day to start your little one is Monday 15 June.
Our space offers opportunities for nature exploration, parks, estuary and garden hikoi, open-ended play, artistic exploration with natural resources - honey crayons, pastels, eco water colour paints, gentle songs, movement and daily rhythm to support regulation, sense of safety and belonging in the space.

Community Involvement

Rooted in the belief that children thrive in village-like communities, we plan to connect with other local families through regular nature play gatherings, park explorations, children's 'art in the park', seasonal celebrations, and shared experiences that nurture belonging, friendship, curiosity, and connection to the wider community.

Childcare Philosophy

I am passionate about holistic childcare, where I have experience working in the Steiner, Pikler and Reggio Emilia philosophies. I am dedicated to supporting children with nurturing relationships, unhurried play, child-led learning, emotional wellbeing, daily rhythm, gentle songs and stories, and nature connection.
Blossom & Rimu is my way of bringing my lived philosophy into a smaller, more intimate space, blending my early childcare practice with a gentle home rhythm that honours each child’s individuality, wellbeing, and curiosity ~ A space where each child feels safe, seen, and free to discover themselves.
