I was looking for something rewarding to do while taking my daughter on the journey with me and I decided to become an Educator with Home Grown Kids. The team here at HGK are fantastic.

I love that I do not have to pay for after school care and school holiday care for my own children, this is a huge savings. My children look forward to the school holidays as they enjoy being at home and interacting with the younger children. We plan a lot of fun activates in the school holidays, so no one is ever bored.
Recently I made the decision to move from centre based teaching to Home Based with the organisation Edubase. While this was a daunting decision as I left the comfort of a salary paid job to running my own little business,I can truly say I have no regrets. I was at a point where I knew I needed to make a change, not only for myself feeling burnt out in a centre, but for my own children who I could see were struggling with the large numbers, constant change in staffing, and long hours.
It has been so rewarding to know while I can offer this positive change to them, I can also open up my home and help other families in the same position. Working as a Home Based educator I find myself using my teaching degree in ways I feel proud of again, I am able to give more time and attention to the tamariki in my care as the extra stress and high numbers are not a factor anymore.
In our curriculum we talk about getting out in the community and providing tamariki with real life experiences, and as a Home Based educator I am finally able to do this, and do it well! It is a wonderful feeling at the end of the day when you can look back and know you gave each child a calm, nurturing, and natural learning environment where it truly is a “home away from home.
