What is Home Based Childcare?
Edubase supports child development in unique ways that wrap around your needs. Find out what home-based childcare is, how it works, and whether it’s right for you and your child.
Home Based childcare is early learning in a cosy, family home - not a big centre. With just four children at a time (including the Educator’s own), your child gets plenty of one-on-one attention and builds strong, trusting relationships in a calm, nurturing space.
A helping hand for parents or whãnau, home-based childcare works around your schedule and family support needs. You’ll be matched with the best Educator for your child, who provides care in their home when you need it. So, if you’re working, studying or just need some time out, your child has a happy, consistent home from home.
Our Educators use Te Whāriki, our national ECE curriculum. However, we understand the importance of social and cultural development. We encourage Educators to teach beyond four walls, so children are regularly involved in community activities and fun outings.
Educators are backed by a qualified Visiting Teacher who visits regularly to support learning, share fresh ideas, and help build strong connections with you and your whānau. You’re never out of the loop - your child’s development is a team effort.
You’ll get access to Storypark, an easy-to-use platform that keeps families in touch.
Our Educators are chosen for their heart and experience. Some are parents themselves; others are trained professionals - and those who aren’t yet fully qualified complete their studies while working. Every Educator is police vetted, holds a current first aid certificate, and goes through a thorough home safety check.
We’re licensed by the Ministry of Education and committed to quality every step of the way. From regular safety checks to external reviews, we make sure your child’s care is not only loving - but also safe, reliable, and held to the highest standards
Many families across New Zealand enjoy the flexibility of home-based childcare. We help you choose the right Educator who respects your family’s values, has a home environment that’s aligned with yours, and works towards the learning goals that matter to you.
Some families qualify for financial assistance. Just ask for more information.
Every family has unique needs when it comes to raising children. While ECE centres focus on group-based programmes, home-based childcare provides small-group care in private homes. Although both options follow the Te Whāriki curriculum, centres have more structured routines and set hours, while home-based care offers a more personalised approach with flexible hours.
Educators in both camps must adhere to the same regulations laid out by the Ministry of Education, and are responsible for delivering the highest standard of care to children in NZ.
